peggin gauges
peggin gauges
About a week ago I noticed my gauges would peg out after starting the expy. just a quick snap over, then return to "zero" then go to the "live" position. About the same time I noticed my battery seemed a bit off when I started it. This continued up until tonight when I swapped out batteries. no more peggin gauges. Is this a oddball thing on mine, or is this a fomoco prescribed indicator that your battery is about to go.

That's interesting. Mine's about 3 years old and I've wondered how much longer before the battery takes a dive. I'll have to look in the morning but I think mine does the peg then settle thing.
Guys,
Had the same thing happen to my 99 about 4 months ago. It wouldn't even turn over with a jump. After the tow to the dealer it turned out to be the battery. If there's not enough voltage for the self test (which the gages also do), they "trip out" as described. I was still showing a green indicator on the battery, but was told in reality it's only measuring that one cell. Instead of 640CA's it was only putting out around 115. New battery and we've been "golden" ever since. The service writer wanted to put in another exact, but upgraded gratis when I said I was going to Wal-Mart for the bigger CCA at the same price he wanted to charge for the 640.
BTW, didn't see any big change on the voltage indicator while the old battery was dying.

Have a question?
Have you noticed your truck picking up RPMs when this happens? I have had this happen to me a number of times. However, when it has, my truck will accelerate when the gauges sweep. I have noticed it while driving (usually coming to a stop) and the gauges will sweep to the 100% position, and then come back to the normal (whatever speed and RPM and gas level).
I have had Ford look into this countless times, and cannot find a reason. I have had the throttle body replaced 3 times, throttle linkage replaced twice as well as the computer. I am going to take it in and see if a new battery will solve the issue. My problems started at about 3 months of age and 5k miles. Hate to think that the battery was low at that point, but I will try anything.

boxter,
never happened after start, but yes at start the engine did seem to run a few more revs than a "normal" start. but after that it never over-rev'd. got the only replacement sam's had in the size catagory for $49, went from factory 650 cca to 850. I guess I wont feel bad about the auto lamp being on so long now. I'd be curious as to your results from a load test as well.
