Question General Maintenance Questions

I tried some searches to answer my questions but couldn’t find anything. I have a 99 Expedition with 67K miles. After reviewing my owners “scheduled maintenance guide” I see that I have neglected to perform the following maintenance tasks.

1. Lubricate front half-shaft slip yoke
2. Lubricate transfer case shift linkage
3. Replace cabin air filter
4. Replace transfer case fluid
5. Perform transaxle services
6. Change automatic transmission fluid

Can I do the maintenance on all these my self?
What is the front half-shaft slip yoke?
Where is the transfer case?
What’s involved with a transaxle service?
Do I really need to change my transmission fluid?
Also, how many (if any) grease fitting are there and were are they at?

Thanks

I can't comment on some of the items, but changing the transfer case fluid is simple. Put the truck up on ramps, and the drain plug and fill plug both are visible on the rear of the transfer case. Use a 3/8" socket extension to reach the plugs - careful it comes out and will overshoot your drain pan. I used a syringe from the auto parts store to refill with 2 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

For the transmission - if you either drop the pan or use the drain plug, you will only get about 30% (max) of the fluid. My dealer charged $99 for a power flush of the transmission which includes a solvent based cleaning. My truck shifted much better after having this done.

Maybe someone else can comment on the remainder of your questions.

You don't have a transaxle. Most transaxles are found under front engine/front drive or rear engine/rear drive vehicles. I'm fairly certain that the cabin air filter is not a factory-installed feature on '99 Expeditions, (I don't have one on my '99) so unless a P/O had one installed, you're okay.

The scheduled maintenance guide is rather generic in nature, meant to apply to a broad array of Ford products, thus the references to the transaxle and cabin filter.

Yeah I remember when the new service tech wanted to service my cabin air filter. I asked him to show me where it was. He had to answear a call all of a sudden. Should have told them to go ahead and change it. Some service managers think the public is so ignorant. What goes around comes around.

Just got my Expedition back from the dealer to do the work and fyi, this is what I learned.

1. Lubricate front half-shaft slip yoke
My vehicle does not have this.
2. Lubricate transfer case shift linkage
This is for manual transmissions only.
3. Replace cabin air filter
Dealer option only, mine did not have. (thanks PaulC)
4. Replace transfer case fluid
Done, $86.02.
5. Perform transaxle services
Not required, only for front wheel drives. (thanks PaulC)
6. Change (Flush) automatic transmission fluid
Done, $94.81.
