Question Clanking Noises

I'm hearing some clanking noises coming from the rear of my truck. It's noticeable when going over bumps and rough roads. Sounds like something is loose. I can't find anything wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
John

Could be your aftermarket exhaust system.

might be that your shocks are shot, or it could be your swaybar bushings, also check your spare tire.

I had 55000 miles on my 2000 expy when i started to experience a bad rattley ride, i replaced the swaybars front and rear with ones from hotchkis and i replaced the front and rear shocks, now it rides like a lincoln again.

I had put new shocks on our Expedition and soon after I was getting a similar noise when going over bumps. To test, I jacked the rear up, took a long pry bar and lifted each tire.(got a clicking when lifting up & down) Sure enough it was the left rear shock- top bolt was a bit loose. I re-tourqed & had no problems since. It was in a tough spot, but I finally did it.
Good luck!

rhdf150,

How hard is it to get to the shock mount? Did you have to remove stuff?

Thanks

As long as you have the right tools it’s not so bad. I used jack stands to support the frame. Removed spare tire, and left the jack under the differential. (So you can lift up a little to relieve some stress on the shock. Then I got in and tightened the top bolt with a torque wrench. I went crazy before I did my test. I have a Borla catback & 1st thought that was it. (I did end up tightening that up). I read your mods & noticed you have a drop kit. Do you think that has anything to do with the noise? As you see in my previous post the test I did with the long pry bar found the problem. Good luck!

rhdf150,

Thanks for the info.
Could be the drop kit, but the symptoms you describe seem similar to mine. The drop kit was only shocks and springs. I tried the same test as you, although I really couldn't move the tire much. I could create the noise by bouncing on the bumper. I'll check the shock mounts.

ScottyBones,
Checked the spare tire area. Anti-sway bar is secure. I do plan to change to Hotchkis bars too. Thanks

Thumbs up

Found it!

Bad shock bushing. I didn't know you could compress these urethane bushings, but mine was oval shaped and the shock casing was touching the axle.
