Question Did I beat up the dealer enough?

Got a new '03 Expedition this weekend. Didn't go in prepared with all the numbers to negotiate correctly. Actually didn't think I would buy one but I did.

I wasn't armed with the invoice or dealer cost numbers but I gave it a go.

Here's the specs.

'03 Expedition 5.4L FX4 offroad package, I guess it's the one right below the Eddie Bauer edition and above the premium edition, the only other option was the 6CD stereo. Has the captain's chairs and the skid plates, blah, blah, blah.

The sticker price was slightly above 38k. Negotiating wasn't that bad but I think I could have done better. I got the dealer down to 33,600 which is about 600 less than the X-Plan price. I didn't know it was less than x-plan until I brought it up to the sales manager. He came back with the 'official' invoice thing. X-plan was 34 something and the A&D plan was 32 something. Dealer invoice was 34404 (I think) and another number that was labled dealer cost minus holdback and incentives was a few hundred dollars more than the A&D price.

I figure the dealer does need to make money and decided that it was ok to be somewhere between the x-plan and that last number. I think by my calculations, the dealer made like 600 bucks off of me from the 3% holdback I found out Ford offers them.

I pick up the truck later this week, the truck isn't even on their lot yet. I'm on the fence whether or not I got the absolute best price but I'm happy with the deal.

Sounds to me like you did just fine.

BTW, if your happy with the deal then it's a good deal. There WILL be others hear that will make claim to having gotten a beetter deal and those that will say that you have them beat.

Some of those that claim to have gotten a better deal will have, others making hugh claims are just rocking your boat. Just rest assured that the dealer will have had to make money for any vehical to be sold. they just don't stay in business to long giving them away.

I think you got a good deal. Edmunds.com publishes details on invoice price vs list price comparisons. Besides, price isnt everything...how you are treated by your dealer when issues arise can save you money in the long run. I don't think they made a lot of money on you....they make most of it from service anyway. Good luck with your new Expy, they look great!

Thanks. I guess I was just looking for some reassurance that I didn't get raped too badly on the price.

The truck so far (2 days) has been pretty nice. Feels alot shorter than my '95 F150 SuperCab but alot taller.

Thanks for your replies.

The wheel base is about twenty inches shorter then a SuperCabs, in fact, the whole truck is about twenty inches shorter and that's alot.
