Question Expedition: Hitch mounted Quad Carrier

Anyone carry a quad (ATV) on the back of there Expedition with one of these hitch carriers?

I go alot on road trips and sometimes i wanna leave the trailer behind, i bought one of these hitch carriers on sale for $50 bucks the other day and wanted see pictures of anyone that's used them. I know what alot of people are gonna say that it's not safe, im know someones done it before but im gonna find a way to place the rear tires upright on the rack and rest the fronts tires up against the rear hatch/ roof of the Expedition. The hitch supports 500 lbs of weight, my quad weights in at 400 lbs.

my quad for thoses that don't know what a quad is...

two major things to keep in mind:

1. the platform is only 60" x 20" with a 2" deep lip, your qaud won't physically fit on it without resting the front end against the hatch like you say you intend, which I would highly discourage as damage to your Expy Will occur.

2. the 'hitch hauler' really 'shallows' up the depature angle meaning you will drag it when entering and exting some driveways and parking lot entrances. (I can carry up to four mountain bikes on mine and had to 'modify' it to gain clearance)

3. (I know I said Two ) these things, though rated at up to 500#, aren't all that sturdy and the twisting forces applied to the narrow gauge 2" sqaure tubing by placing your 400# qaud runner on it will have it twisting like a wet noodle. If you value your four runner, don't do it. I know trailers can be a real pain but you will need to get a way heavier duty 'custom' platform to do it with.

TOO heavy.
It will bend in a heartbeat on a washboard road.
You can get a nice small utility trailer at HomeDepot for 499 or 599.
There are also some small utility trailers at Harbor Freight

for 300 up to 600 ready to roll that are designed for lawn tractors, ATVs, snowmobiles, etc.

No way would I use one of those to haul a Quad. Especially mounting it the way you say. If the Quad was to come a little loose and start to bounce up against the Expi door and roof, you could end up with some damage. Plus, it just doesn't look sturdy enough. I'd hate to find out the hard way that it shouldn't be done.

they actually make carriers for quads that look a lot like that. The ones I have seen are at A1 auto racks dot com and have ramps for easier loading.
