Is my AWD going bad...?
Hello all
I'm new to the boards but not really. I used to be a member when I had my 97 F150 4x4 Flareside Here's a few Pics of my 97 f150 4x4 , but after it died, I took a break for a little while and now I have a 2001 Expedition AWD/4WD XLT.
I REALLY REALLY miss that truck...
AND I have a problem to start off my new stay here with you all that I was hoping someone could help me with.
On my 2001 Expedition XLT AWD/4WD, when I make a turn in normal AWD, it seems to act like it is in 4WD and it feels like one of the wheels is not being allowed to slip at the appropriate speed(in the front). Has anyone had this problem before and/or does anyone know what could possibly going on here. I took it in to the Ford dealership and they said they could see nothing wrong...typical response when your extended warranty is about to expire

I had a stubborn problem with my '99 Expedition that showed up at about 33,000 miles. While making a very low-speed (< 10MPH) turn in either direction, a slight pulsing sensation could be felt in the vehicle, but NOT through the steering wheel. Took it to my local Ford dealer where it went through the following processes over several visits:
1. Presumed binding of parking brake.
Procedure: Readjust
Resolution: No Change
2. Presumed binding sourced in rear (non-limited-slip) differential.
Procedure: Pulled rear diff plate off, performed visual inspection, reinstalled plate added new diff fluid.
Resolution: No Change
3. Presumed binding in front differential.
Procedure: Observed front diff fluid low, pulled front diff plate off, replaced a seal (don't know which one) to stop leak, performed visual inspection, reinstalled plate.
Resolution: No Change
4. Examined all moving front driveline/suspension components for wear or damage.
Resolution: All ok, no change
What's left? The transfer case.
5. Examined transfer case with the assumption that the case was partially engaged in 4 HI while selector **** was in A4WD position.
Procedure: Visual examination of transfer case with truck on lift, engine idling, transmission in Drive and front wheels turned (Don't even think of trying this yourself!). Vibration felt in transfer case. Call to Ford hotline. Even though transfer case fluid was changed less than two months prior, Ford recommended drain/refill of case. Result: Vibration diminished, but still present. Ford says drain/refill again. Result: Vibration gone. Ford rep claims that water from condensation may have clung to transfer case components (clutches?) and caused partial engagement of front differential.
Resolution: Expy has been driven 19,000 miles and through two snowy mountain winters with no vibration and flawless transfer case performance.

Thank you. That sounds exactly like what's going on with my Expedition. I will try that this weekend.
Do you or anyone else know how many quarts of fluid the t-fer case takes and is it Mercon IV? Is there any additive that needs to go in with it?
THanks again...

On my 97 It takes almost 2 quarts, and its the dexron/mercon III.I just changed mine this weekend,I would recommend a suction gun if you dont already have one,it made the job a breeze.I did not use any additives,or do I have any experience with transmission additives but I am looking forward to hearing some of the other guys post.
