Painting Side steps and Body Pieces..?

Hey,

I drive a 98 Navigator and I wanted to paint ALL of the grey Plastic pieces on the body black. I tried using a High Gloss Side/Trim Spray Paint but it peeled off after washing it with the Power Washer. I currently have the Very back bottom pieces, and the Front piece right below the Grill painted Black with the Spray Paint, But i do not think that the paint will last. I am afraid it is going to start peeling off again, and although it looks pretty good, it is not an exact match to the Factory Black Paint.

What kind of paint can I buy for this that will last? Any help?

thanks

J

Good to hear from you again PhatNav. I too have looked into painting my bumpers and running boards. I have seen a few of these done and they look really tight. The best bet is to have it shot by a professional painter. With bumpers and plastic trim you need to add a flex agent to the paint to keep it from chipping. I was going to remove the pieces myself and have a painter shoot them. This should at least save me the r&r labor and it isn't that difficult for the bumpers and running boards. I'm not sure about the trim above the running boards though, but a local body shop could probably help you. I'm hoping to find a painter that does some work on the side at home and be able to save a fair amount of money.

With a vehicle as nice as a Navigator, you want to make sure it is done right. On a side note, did you ever get the Ground Force lowering kit? If so, fill me in on how it worked and shoot a picture and put it in a gallery. Good luck on your project as I am anxious to see it when it's done.

Hey!

thanks for the reply. You are right about the paint... I think it should be done right. The spray paint is just a temporary thing until I can get it to the local Paint shop (Rocky Mnt. paint and Body). They painted the piece below my Grille Grey because it was broken when I was side Swiped...I believe that before they painted it grey, it was white, so if they can paint it grey, they can most likely paint it Black. I wil let ya know about that, but that will probably be later on this summer, along with the Roof Screw Hole Shave.

about the Lowering Kit.... I am painting a fence right now for my father.. It is a HUGE project and He is paying 14$ per hour. I have worked 9 hours and and not even 1/4 of the way done... Hopefully, I make about 1500 Which will be enough to Cover the lowering KIT AND rims. I want 20's First, and the lowering kit to help the 20's fill in the space.. Like I said before, I payed another 2000 so i currently only have 500 cash. With the 2000 after painting, the kit and rims are on the way.

I thought I was gonna get the kit sooner, and I still may do that as my next mod, maybe 1/2 the way through painting. I havn't forgot about ya though ... I'll FOR sure let you know. Be looking for a Post that says " Naviman: Ground Force"..

Well n e ways, getting wordy here.. Thanks again for the reply!!!

Jon :-)
