wierd shifting

After a few trips to the mountains Ive noticed some strange shifting. Ill be in OD, start up a long hill, click the OD off the RPM's shoot up, without letting off at all, the RPM willdrop about 500. Almost like there is a short gear between 3rd and 4th. Once this happens even if I throttle up slightly and cannot get it to down shift in the same manner. Almost like the clutches are slipping slightly in 3rd.

Anyone ever notice this?

There has been lots of discussion about this across the board. The general feeling is that it is the torque converter locking up. From what I can tell this seems correct. It will happen also with the OD off, it's just that you don't notice it so much. Under full throttle it will usually occur around 2700+ rpm in third. Don't worry about it. It is normal.

I have seen this in my 99 Expy EB 4X4, but I'm convinced that its more a tach anomaly than it is strange shifting. I see the tach move lots more then I can feel or hear engine rpms change.

Especaily if you're on a grade, it will lock up quicker. I've finally figured that out after nailing it on slight grades and watching it closely. TQ locks up quick to give you the torque to pull it. If you're trying to pass or just accelerate quicker, you can't get into the RPM range you want and it can be frustrating. It'd be nice to be able to control the TQ.
