2010 expy wheel centercap clearance

So I bolted my 08 FX2 20" wheels on my newish expedition and my center caps won't clear the CV shaft spindle, I bought some 1/8 spacers and it still won't clear, so my question is... Can I safely cut 1/2 inch off the spindle shank? Is it hollow or solid? I'm afraid I will cut it and fluid will pour out but it looks like I should be alright, just want some assurance because I do not want to run bolt on spacers.
Here's some pics and thanks

You can cut it. It doesn't retain fluid, but you'll have to pretty careful not to ruin the threads.

Also, tip for getting responses, be patient.
