You have to clear the codes to get the CEL to go out. Without a scanner, just disconnect the battery for a few minutes.
If you want your own code reader:
If you don't really know what you are looking at, just take it to a shop and get the cooling system pressure tested. Could be as simple as a leaky hose or as serious as a blown head gasket.
