Are the 5.4L and the 4.6L engines basically the same?

Is the major difference between the 5.4L and the 4.6L engines basically displacement or is there more to it than that? I have a great running '00 Lariat Scab 4x4 with a 5.4L and have had nothing but great performance and have no experience with the 4.6L engine.
Any Comments appreciated?

Same basic layout...Ford designed them that way to be able to use common tooling for a lot of the operations so that shifting the percentage of each that they build is easy.

same bore, spacing and angles...different strokes

What the heck is going on here?

A question about how many cubic inches a 5.4l is gets about 25 rambling responses including my own.

Any trivia question about the all-powerful "L" gets 35 responses.

And these "too small but as far as I can tell cool the engine just fine radiators"........well, we all know about that 685-post thread.

I thought sure we would have a complete list of every single nut and bolt differance between the two by now.

(I am joking you realize....right?)

Longer Stroke = Different Block Height

The 5.4 has a higher deck than the 4.6 to accomodate the longer stroke. For some reason, Ford likes doing it that way - it is the same as the difference between the 302 and 351w.

This means very few parts are interchangable, although the basic layout is the same.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Hey Logical,
I know what you mean about disproportionate replies for seemingly easy to answer questions like the one with the water puddle under his screw after running with A/C and then parking it.

I thought every member commented on that one. I mean give me a break, every car I have ever had since I was a kid left a puddle of water under it after runs with the A/C on. Is that one real difficult or am I just more aware of my surroundings than some?

Let me know if I ask something silly as I think I would want to know.
Thanks,
DaveMan
