Unhappy Swaying in the Wind

My 2000 expedition 4x4 has a slight pitch and yaw in the wind. I feel a slight gust and then you feel like you should steer into the wind. Feels like the suspension reacting in only a 10mph wind. The truck is stock height. It is not a serious issue but is annoying on a long drive. Any suggestions, alignment, shocks?

I already put a bigger sway bar on the back, with no difference.

Without going over the tire's max pressure, try increasing your tire pressure and see if that doesn't help. I've always been under the impression that the Ford specs for air pressure is always too low. Makes for a squishy tire and in my opinion, squishy handling.

Thumbs down Swaying in the wind

I raised the air pressure up as sugested. Ford recommends 30 front and 35 rear. Raised the front to 33 and the rear to 38. No difference.

You can feel this movement only on the steering

Any one think a front end alignment would help? This truck only has 23,000 miles

I'd think that shocks would be the most improvement. Not sure if $400 plus your labor (or pay someone else) would be worth the benefit to you, but maybe.

Unhappy REDEXPY

When you find a solution let me know. Mine been doing this since I bought it. In fact it bounce around so bad I thought they forgot to put shocks on. And when it came to wind or just going down the freeway was a job just keep it in a lane. Finally put some shocks on for the bounce and a sway bar for the body roll, which really helped. But as far as the pitch and yaw I can't figure it out. Mine feels like it has to much play in the center position, so when I get a side wind I react to late. It gets to be a white nuckler when passing a rig in his air wash and following another at the same time. This is my highway vehicle and it becomes a pain in the ***. I also had stock 17" firestones and change to the AT/S tires and had no difference. Then changed to 16" 285 KO's and no differnce. I can't get the steering box tightend because the dealer said it's not adjustable. Then there is the speed sensitive steering, I wish it had a regular steering.

BUT not all X's have this problem. Only a few of us do. If I can find a 2001 with my same options I would trade mine in, and take off all my aftermarket parts. Or just live with it.

Good luck

Ford has discontinued the Electronic Variable Orifice steering on Expys as of April 10, 2001. My wife's '01 handles like crap just as everyone here describes. I test drove an Expy that was built in June 2001 and what a difference. That thing drove exceptionally well. Drove straight as an arrow and had superb steering feel. I'm currently trying to get Ford to update mine. We'll see how that goes.

Smile

Please let us know what was updated. I'd like to keep mine if I could solve this problem.

Thanks.
