Squeaky brakes
Squeaky brakes
Anybody had a problem with squeaky brakes on an Expedition?? Girlfriend has a 1999 Expedition, Eddie Bauer, 5.4, 4x4 with 88K miles on it. Brakes squeak when you stop. Problem is, they're *brand* new. Rear brakes have maybe 5K miles on them, then I did the front 2 weeks ago. Did new pads and rotors. Makes the same squeak as it did before I replaced them.
is the sound coming from rear if so you have rotors over drums, be sure the shoes are not tight, this will couse a drag and couse a squeek, just back ebrake shoes off one click to even them, be sure to use anti squeek on back of pads
Make sure you apply a lot of anti-squeak grease there Zach.
On top of that, there is a break-in process for brakes. You need to "bed" them by doing a couple very hard stops. This allows for the rotor and pad to shear to get lubricated by the pad's lining which is usually the asbestos which is similar to graphite in a lock.
Another thing to check for is to make sure the calipers are true by measuring them for their trueness. If you are using old rotors, make sure they are true as well. If they can be turned, I'd turn them. However, newer rotors can't be turned; one time use only.
In any case, slightly squeaky brakes aren't really a sign of any problems... some just squeak depending on the material used.
