Push-To-Start Igntion Done! How-To + Pics

Thanks to gcw for the idea. Did a How-To because the process was a little different on a 97-02 expy. Here it is

A good shopping list:
Momentary on push button swith
on-off toggle switch
hoop connectors (dont know the exact name)
3ft of red wire, 3ft of black wire

Take out the cigarette lighter and saw this off with a hack saw

Mount your push button switch into the back of the cig lighter

Solder a black wire into a hoop connector (do this twice) and mount screw the hoop connector into the back of your switch

Now remove the access panel beneath the steering wheel column...its a PITA to do but it needs to be done. Locate a bundle of wires that run into a plastic white box...there will be electrical tape wrapped around them so remove that. Locate the red wire with blue stripe and the blue wire with green stripe.

Tap into the blue/green wire with one of the black wires from your switch (Dont forget to run the black wires through the dash first so they arent showing)

Now cut the red/blue wire. From the end of the wire that is coming from the steering wheel, solder on a longer wire and run it into the on position of your 2 way switch (use a hoop connector). Take the other end of the wire (Coming from the engine) and run it down and connect it up with the remaining black wire from your push button switch. twist those two wires together and solder them into a hoop connector and screw that into the off position of your two way switch.

Drill a hole in your access panel that was earlier removed and mount the two way switch wherever you want

Put everything back together and enjoy!

Thanks for the clear writeup and diagram. I'm going out to buy the parts right now and i'll work on it tomorrow after class. I'll let you know how it goes.

By the way, the "hoop connectors" are called ring terminals

best kill switch you can do is pull a PCM power wire and run a switch in line with it, so the car cant even run even if someone were to jumper the starter, or hot wire the ignition switch
