Broken Shifter on 99 expedition (auto)
Broken Shifter on 99 expedition (auto)
For some time now the column shifter on my expedition has been out of whack. i.e. when you put it in park, the shift indicator was somewhere in between park and reverse. The problem is becoming worse. Now it is so bad that I cannot even shift all the way down to 1st gear. The biggest problem with this is the exact opposite of getting into first...I am having trouble getting it to lock into Park. Thus, the vehicle wants to roll. And I DON'T need that happening. And, to top it off, being 11 years old, the e-brake cable is snapped!
Has anyone had a similar problem? How hard is the fix? Is it a DIY job; if not, what should I expect this to run me at a shop?

Im not sure about the shifter, but the e-brake cable is easy to replace. We put one on a 00 F150 that my brother use to have. I think the part of the cable that broke on his cost around 50..but its been awhile since we replace it.
For the shifter problem, see this thread: https://www.f150online.com/forums/v8...-selector.html
Does anyone have any pictures of the torx screws you have to tighten up? My 97' Expy was doing the same thing. I think i found the right ones and i did tighten them but now it seems my orange selector needle is even more off to the right in any gear.
Is the shift indicator just off or is the shifter not going far enough left or right to get into park or first? My 99 shift indicator was off so it appeared I could not get into 1st but it could. The shift indicator is easy to adjust if you pull the panel under the steering column, follow the wire to the shifter, and adjust the gray wheel until it lines up. The shop manual says something about hanging an 8 pound weight on the shifter but I had no problem simply turning the wheel. No idea how to actully adjust the shifter itself.
my 2004 Expy XLT just turned 101,000 miles and wouldn't you know, it just did the same thing. I can shift the P, N, D ok, by feel, but the indicator is stuck in D, just not what it really is.
I'm going in today to fix the loose screws, per the earlier link provided. Thanks!
