shifter problem

hello all, i have a 97 expy with a shifter problem. i came home from a trip and my daughter says the expy won't go into park and the key is still in it. i started by checking the cable and shifter at the trans, all is good down under, so then i started on the column. after removing dash pieces i found a broken hold down clamp(pn 7e400) that allowed the shifter assembly to move around instead of staying straight. still no park. when i went to my local ford dealer for the clamp, they said 2 other parts could be broken,pn 3e723 and 3e715, 2 plastic parts. problem is i can't see them to check if they're ok. anybody know what i'm looking for or had a similar problem?

Did you remove the actual shroud covering the steering column to see what was inside?

sorry for the delay , i couldn't log on. i fixed it. it was a bolt, 1 of 2 at the bottom of the column linkage where the shift cable connects was gone. got a new bolt and new hold down clamps, now it's ok.
