No heat..Blend door or actuator

I have a 2003 Expedition. Since I bought it I lived in Hawaii where I had no need for heat. I recently moved to upstate New York and surprize..no heat. Air comes out all the right places when I select them. The blower fan changes speed just fine. I have drained and flushed coolant. Supply and return line to the heater core are hot so I know the core is not clogged. I have replaced the thermostat but still no heat. I know the blend door is moving some because I can have the temperature select on cold and slowly move it to hot. The temperature of the air changes from cold to just above ambient but not even luke warm. Is it the blend door or the actuator and do I need to pull the whole dash to do it? On a side note I do have a check engine light that comes back after disconnecting the battery. I thought maybe there could be a vacuum problem not allowing the door to actuate all the way. I do not here any leaks under the hood or under the dash.

better luck

I hope you have better luck than me....mine was a simple problem, but a PITA fix. My blend door was broken around the drive motor....if I hit the gas it went cold...fine in the summer..... but then when I slowed for a light the heat came on....WTF!!!! though it was the switch till then. I had to pull the ENTIRE dash out from door to door due to the blend door and box being in the center hidden by the dash. you have to take all the stuff out then the door can be taken off and the blend door is there and can be gotten from ford for 12.00

But if yours is moving....maybe your door is working, and the seal is in the way... or maybe the part that goes over the motor is only partly broken. another bad note is the act motor us UNDER the blend box ontop of the carpet!

A note.. you can turn the front heat on low.. then turn the rear air on hot to get some heat in your rig!

I fixed it! Yeah me

Took the dash apart today and found the problem. The blend door motor(actuator) had two brken teeth on one of the plastic gears. So when I adjusted the temperature control to hot the motor could not move the blend door all the way because of the broken gear. Retested sat. I have heat now.

Yea, seems to happen a lot with those motors, especially in the rear.

Glad you got it fixed.
