Post Y & X Pipe question

I see all the talk about the X or Y pipe in the exhaust forum. Does the 00 Expy have the same setup? I guess the X pipe allows you to run true duals? so anyone have this setup. Is this smog legal in CA? Who makes these pipes for the expy or is it the same as the F150?

thanks....

Hi Adrian,

These are 2 completely different parts, that go in different places.

The "Y" pipe is what exits the exhaust manifold on each side and then reduces down to just 1 pipe. It's not very efficient, and where the "Y" reduces down to just one pipe, it scrunches down the diameter and presents a bit of an impediment to exhaust flow. So thee are now a couple of different aftermarket companies making better "Y" pipes for the very front of the exhaust for better function. This "Y" must be split so it doesn't reduce down to just 1 pipe, or completley re-done if you want to install true dual exhausts, though this iusn't necesary to get some more power from exhaust system mods, you can always do a nice 3" single cat-back system and get nice results. If you go true duals, you'd need to reduce pipe diameter to avoid losing torque on part-throttle in the low to mid-rpm ranges, but that's another discussion.

"X" pipes are something completely different; "X" pipes are used to balance the 2 "sides" of the exhaust in true-dual exhaust systems, to allow proper balance of the exhaust pulses between the 2 cylinder banks in "V" engines, like a V-8.

I hope that helps a bit,

ok, yes that makes sense. So the Y pipe is somthing I personally wouldnt mess with. Now from what I understand the X pipe is behind the cat so it could be used legally in CA. Im looking at a Spin Tech exhaust, which uses an X pipe. Im mostly interested in this because from what I understand there is no loss of low end power, and the improvment is throught the power range. In your experience is this true? Basically I just want a nice rumble, a little more than a Gibson, but not obnoxious (sp?), and of coarse some power gain, but definatly NO loss. My next step after the exhaust will be the intake mod and your SuperChip.

thanks!
