Post inexpensive mod suggestions for a 97'

Hello,

I just purchased a 97 Expedition 5.4 2x and was looking to find some inexpensive mods. Everything is stock other than a stereo I added. Any suggestions? Thanks.

WELCOME to the site!

Are you looking for appearance or performance mods? Also, is there a specific ceiling for "inexpensive"?

Also, be careful- mods can be addictive!

I really don't want to spend more than a few hundred dollars for right now, but I plan on owning the vehicle for a long time so who knows what I would do in the future. I am looking mostly for performance mods but maybe a few appearance. What I was thinking is starting off with some simple things like air filter, plugs, etc that could possible improve a few hspwr and reduce the gas mileage a little.

Thanks

Without a doubt, give Mike Troyer a little more than a couple hundred bucks!! He's moderates the computer chips forum.

Oh, if you send him money, and you computer code, he'll make your truck come alive.

You can also order it online here. Look for a post of his or the online store or the link to the order form.

Seriously, a Superchip would definetly be the first few hundred I would spend on performane mods. My truck is soooo much more enjoyable to drive with the power, drivability and greatly improved shifting.

Cruise the computer chip forum and you'll see.

Good luck with what ever you do, and welcome to the boards!!

If I read your reply correctly:
"could possible improve a few hspwr and reduce the gas mileage a little"....
I can think of a LOT of mods that will "reduce" the gas mileage....

I know, you want to increase the mileage, but I just couldn't resist.

Enjoy the new ride.

    ndz90210,

If you want to add mpg, start with a change to a synthetic oil and transmission fluid. I prefer Mobil1 because of availibility over Amsoil. Both are great products though. Also try Mobil1's oil filter or K&N, along with K&N air filter. Simple things that will give an increase in mileage and will give longevity to the power/drivetrain. Also check the fuel filter. It's often forgotten, but if clean will help mileage. Keep tire air pressure up! About 10% over tire manufactures' rating.

Beautiful truck you have there, congradulations! As you can see on the boards/signatures modifications are addictive. But, think long term first.

    Welcome to the site DJMaryland!
Those are some very good recommendations.

Synthetic fluids will set you back a couple of hundred bucks, but they are also the only thing that has actually helped gas mileage on our X. After that, I'd do airbox and exhaust mods. Then, a Superchip- if you can tolerate feeding the truck 93 octane fuel.

Hey DJ what do you mean keep the tire pressure 10% over manufactures ratings? If it is what I think you want him to do then I would have to say don't do it. Ask yourself this. Why does fuel mileage go up with more air pressure? Decreased resistance would be the answear. What that means is less contact patch which translates into less stopping ability let alone cornering. Multiply a slick road factor in there and you can easily increase stopping distance by at least 10%. Doesn't sound like much but when the 70-0 stopping distance is around 200ft that 10% is a car length increase on the dry pavement. All this to save a little fuel? How about the lady with two kids in the Geo Metro that you hit when you can't stop. Sorry for the long post, but it really gets me when people are so willing to sacrifice safety to save a buck.
