Question I need new tires... what size, and kind?

I have a 1999 Expedition EB 5.4, 4x4 with LLS. The stock tires are 265/70/17's. Can I go any bigger safely on the stock wheels? The truck came from the dealer with passenger type tires and I want to switch to a LT tire - just because they look a little meaner. Any brand and size recomendations?

Thanks in Advanced!
Fred

Michelin LTX M/S is a great tire. smooth ride, good lifetime, looks mean.
You might could go a size higher

Think maybe a 285/60/17 would fit? That's less than a 1/4" height difference between tires.

I switched from the 17" to 16" and put on BFG's KO'S 285/75/16 and are 33 inches in diameter. No rubbing but comes close to the lower valance on turns. I know you want ones for 17" but it will give an Idea on diameter of a 33" tire.

I've seen 285 60 17's P-Zeros and they look great. That same width and ratio in 18" looks incredible.

FastFreddie,

Let me know what you find. I also want to replace my Goodyear Wrangler RTS 265/70/17's with tires that are more suitable for towing. I'll be following the thread...

How come you guys don't go for bigger wheels? It improves the appearance of the Expedition so much. I recently put 20" Momo Vantage rims on mine and it looks 200% better than with my 17" stock wheels.

I just got rid of my Goodyear Wrangler RTS 265/70/17 tires, they were the worst tires I have ever owned. I put on the Michelin LTX M/S and am very happy. Amazing improvements over the Goodyears. They are a bit pricey.

Regards, Tim

The reason I don't switch to bigger wheels is because you loose load carring capacity with lower profile tires. That's why the Expy with 16" wheels has a slightly higher towing capacity than the 17" wheeled models. I've thought of Chrome Lightning Wheels - or the HD wheels. I can't lose any towing capabilities - I have to tow my Mustang to the races.

From the way it looks I might be going with the stock size (just to make sure there is no clearance problems with the LLS. I'm looking at the BFG TA/KO's... they are expensive but everyone that has them, loves them.
