Question Towing Capacaties?

I have a 1999 4x4 Expedition with a 5.4 Liter engine and a 3:31 open axle, and the owners manual claims a 6400 pound trailer weight rating. Has anyone tried towing heavy trailers with this type of set-up? I have a 26 foot camper trailer that weighs 6000 pounds empty, and I think I may be pushing the truck a bit too much, especially when everything is loaded up. Any help would be appreciated, Ben Willard.

I towed a 25' boat with my 97 Expy but it had a 3.73 axle. I just replaced my 97 with a 2001 and I ordered the 2001 just to get the 3.73 rear end (part of the high altitude pkg. I figure my total tow payload is around 6000 lbs. Personally I think you will be pushing it towing with a 3.31 axle. You should not expect it to run in overdrive. I have a friend who towed a 23' boat with his 97 with a 3.42 and that is what he experienced towing under 5000 lbs. I have never investigated what's involved in changing our the rear axle ration but you might consider that.

Good luck,

Thumbs up

He's right. It might be pushing it. Rear gear would be a good start but I'd look into what rating that would put you at. You'd have to find some reference somewhere though.

It's funny, used to be a 4x4 was rated higher that 2wd always. Now it's the other way around. My 2000 2wd EB Expy is rated at 8000. Through in the mods I'f done and I bet 8000 wouldn't even feel like much. I want to hook up to something sooo bad, just to see...
