Post about the "AWD" Function in the '98 expy...

HI nomo and others..sorry I wasnt able to get together with y'all over the holidays, the weather in the okla was absolutely awful. didnt risk it, stayed put in enid.

Although we did go to founders tower in okc for new years...

Anyways, I found a neat '98 expy xlt. It has the "AWD" function. I havent found any info on it. I would like to know how different it is from the "auto" function on the explorer. I think they dropped this from the current models, is that right????

Are all 4 wheels truly powered, or just when wheel slippage is detected??

thanks, karl

Hi Karl, the AWD mode detects slippage and engages the front end. I believe the 97 and 98 expy has AWD, 2 high, 4 high, and 4 low. 99 and newer the 2 high was eliminated, so it is in AWD all of the time. I kind of wish they would have left the 2 high option. The AWD in my 99 eddie bauer seems to work great, no complaints. Maybe it is a trade off for a little more horsepower in the 99 and newer.

Good luck, kray
