Computer Chip
Need advise!!!I'm planning to install computer chip on my XPD.Which brand do you recommend? Jet performance or Super chip or is there any other brand I should know about.
Thanks for your help
Thanks for your help
I believe the superchip is the best you can buy for the money. Do a search on here for superchip and I'm sure you will find answers to all your questions. Also,I haven't heard or read anything bad on the superchip(other than having to use high octane gas, which I don't consider bad). I'm going to get one as soon as money(and wife)permits. Good luck.
Thanks for the info. You said higher octane?
if I'm not mistaken ,It says on the xpd manual that 87 is highly recommended and using premium octane will cause damage to engine???How true is this??

I installed a superchip last month in my 00 EB EXPY. You can definatly tell a difference.
Throttle is more responsive, trans. shifts are firm now(doesnt feel like it "slides" into gear},gas mileage even went up 3/10 so far. From a 30 or 60 mph stomp, this baby pulls hard! Its worth the money. I have heard from people with the hypertech and jet products and they just dont seem to produce as much power as the superchips.I myself did alot of research before deciding on the superchip...no regrets! Buy it!

I agree with Skank Dog, the only problem is TRYING to keep your foot out of it. Too much fun.
Mike, once you get here, why would it feel like I get more power from a dead start, than a 30mph down shift? Not complaining, I wouldn't change it at all, just curious.

I think the Superchip is the only one that works all the time. Others only work at WOT.
I have not ried the rest but WOOOHOO you will not be disapointed.

Been running a Superchip in my '00 Expy XLT 5.4L for 6 months, and it has been outstanding! It is the best upgrade you can do to your truck. Superchip is the only one that works ALL THE TIME. Most others work only at WOT. Superchip provides better throttle response, smoother shifting, and a lot more get-up-an-go.
Highly recommended.

Hi Blue-X
Your owner's manual is correct, with the *factory* program, you should only use 87 octane, as anything more is a waste, and the program is not set up for it, especially the difference in burn rate of higher octane fuel, which is slower, and that has to be compensated for in the fuel curves for proper driveability, and *that* is why your owner's manual says to use 87 octane.
With the Superchip, your engine is re-tuned specifically for the use of premium gasoline, so you can use it safely, that is how we get the additional power, and also gets you an improvement in gas mileage to a smaller extent, about 1.5-2.0 more mpg on the highway, on average, is what gets reported back here to us.
The Superchip is the only one for these vehicles that tunes at not only all rpms, but more importantly, at all throttle positions, so they help add not only more power, but also improve everyday overall driveability, which increases the driving enjoyment of the vehicle noticeably.

Being a business geek, I had to do an ROI (return on investment) before I thought about buying one of these. I used a $225 purchase price, 87 octane($1.30) versus 93 octane ($1.45), 2 MPG savings as assumptions. I found it would take between 4 and 6 years to pay for itself in improved gas mileage. This, I'm sure, is not important to most of you who just want the improved HP and shifting. Just thought I'd chime in.
Hi jtenczar,
Thanks for your post, it's very interesting for us "data hounds".
Just to be clear, there is no "ROI" to be expected on a Superchip, that's a mistake to assume or expect in my opinion. It's a *performance* chip, not a "gas mileage chip", there is no such thing as a "gas mileage chip" per se, even though most people do see mileage improvements with the Superchip when they keep their foot out of the throttle.
Most Superchip owners do report back getting improvements in gas mileage when they can keep their foot out of the gas, but this is just a by-product of the tuning on part-throttle rather than anything that was deliberately done to raise fuel mileage, just to give you a bit more of an explanation. It's the increased spark advance used on part-throttle that gives the potential for mpg improvements.
It's a *performance* chip, and should never be viewed as being intended to give any kind of "return on investment", it isn't a stock or a bond or real estate, it's a performance chip, so don't expect any kind of ROI.
You cannot accurately or fairly assume that everyone is going to get 2 more mpg from the Superchip, as there are just far too many variables, the most obvious of which is that many people who install a performance chip drive the vehicle harder as a result more often than they did before, at least for a while after installation while they're checking out the new performance levels and that will of course cause mileage to drop. Now, whenever we get a report back from someone who has actually done a true direct comparison in mileage in a back-to-back "test", the Superchip does give clear improvements; on the V-8 automatic F-150's that averages about 1.5 -2.0 more mpg. But of course whether each person will see gas mileage increases will depend primarily on how the vehicle is driven, and the energy content of the fuel being used.
Thanks for posting your numbers, that is interesting, I wanted to comment quickly on this, just in case you are actually expecting some kind of ROI from the Superchip, to let you know that you shouldn't expect any ROI. The potential mileage gains should be viewed as icing on the cake, in my opinion. Some people do drive easy enough that the Superchip can over time perhaps pay for itself on occasion, but in all fairness I'd say that's the exception rather than the rule in gasoline engines.
Just FYI......

Just to add a little, today my brother in law who is in town took off to go look at some old muscle cars (saw a few beautiful cars, 1969 COPO Camaro, 2 awesome LS6 Chevelle's..I'll stop). He got in my Expedition and laughed. He had a 1999 Expy 5.4ltr and when he saw my 17.0MPG on the computer he laughed with amazement. He never saw anything near that high with his. I nailed it a few times on the way and he was amazed at the pull and responsivness. Mine has a Superchip, his did not.
He's now thinking about getting one for his 7.3 4x4 Limited Excursion.
And oh ya, I fell hard for a 1969 427 4 spd rag top Vette that had ice cold factory air and drove like new. Did I mention the COPO Camaro?

Hi Family Ride,
A COPO Camaro?!? I think you mentioned it, you lucky devil! I've ridden in one (very briefly, long ago in the 70's), but not driven it. And getting to see that big-block Corvette with factory air was nice too, I'll bet. Sounds like a fantastically expensive collection of *very* rare cars, drool......
Glad to hear your brother-in-law liked the performance & mileage of your Expy.
