Post Wheels and tires

Anybody running larger wheels and tires on their stock Expy's? I currently have a 2000 XLT 4x4 with the performance package running 17x8s.

I am looking to get wider wheels (17x10 or 18x8 or 10). I don't want to lift the truck but want to fill out the wheel well as much as I can. Also, I really don't want to go to a huge wheel (20) and have to go with a low profile street tire. This truck will have to go through the snow and occasionally go into the grass and mud.

Any suggestions on the wheels and/or tires on the Expy would help me out.

Thanks

You'll find a larger selection of tires that fit 16" rims instead of 17"+. The BFGoodrich ATs in a 285/75R16 size on 16x8 rims look terrific on an Expedition.

Well... Goodyear makes a Wrangler GS-A in 37x12.50x17. No idea if it would fit, though. Definitely taller and wider. 7" taller and 1.75 wider.

If you don't want/need that much heighth, you could go with BFG's Sport Truck T/A HR4 on a 10" rim - 345/55R17's. About 2" taller and 3" inches wider. (More a performance truck tire than an all terrain)

Question

How about a few more questions? I have a 99 XLT with factory alumnium wheels. I was thinking about switching to the stock 17" wheels and standard size tires. Will any changes be necessary to keep the spedo and gearing the same? Are the 17" wheels of a late model 4x4 F-150 with the off road package the same wheels that are on the Exp?
Thanks for the help.

Gato,

I have seen the Antera rims on several Expeditions. Not too flashy, but a little expensive. They come in 18 and 17in. An awesome tire is the Bridgetone Dueller H/P or HTS. I have these on my Lexani 18x8 and they are great. For a pic of the Anteras on an Expy go to the following link:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info DRC.

Where can you find the Antera rims besides BMHA?

And how do they look on yours? Did the 18's with the Bridgestones fill out the wheel well more than the stock 17s, or does it look pretty much the same?

Thanks

Gato,

I also would not get them at bhma. I don't know where you are located, but if there are any tire shops around you town they should be able to order them for you. I don't think tire shops like Big-O tires or similar ones would order them for you, but look for shops that carry custom rims. Just look in your phone book and give them a call.
As far as filling up the wheel well, the 18in wheels did not fill up much more than stock because the tires are not as thick as the stock one. I have 60 series tires on my 18in, whereas the stock 17in come with 70 series tires. However, my car is slightly lowered so my wheel wells are filled up more. Take a look.

However, since these wheels are wider, the handling on the Expy is greatly improved. I was actually not expecting the improvement, but it is definetly there. Hope this helps.

El Gato,

For what you are trying to accomplish, I highly recommend 18" wheels/tires.

I just bought 18" x 8.5" TSW Trackers with 285/60/18 Bridgestone H/P tires and LOVE THEM. They filled out the fender wells, look awesome, and improved the ride & handling and they are virtually the same overall diameter as stock.

Stock 17" 265/70/17:
tire width: 10.43"
overall diameter: 31.6"

18" 285/60/18:
tire width: 11.22"
overall diameter: 31.5"

Also, since you have an XLT it probably doesn't have the fender flares that the Eddie Bs have so they will fill the wells nicely.
