Hello all. I'm getting ready to get the wife a 97 XLT 4wd, is there anything specific I should check for? Thanks.

Yeah, try to find one withOUT:

1) cracked doors,
2) exhaust exiting in front of the wheel
3) piston slap
4) rear sliding window water leaks
5) worn-out rotors & pads
6) pre-recall lug-nuts
7) green'd chrome on the RR hubcap
8) window washers that go on by themself or
9) window washer lever that works when it wants to
10) stripped wiper arm pivot

Other than that, they're great!

My leased '97 was a great truck (after I fixed #2, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10) -- and despite those minor issues + not fixing #1, prompted my purchase of "Nick".

There are no door cracks on an Expedition. Nor is there a sliding rear window. If I were you I'd look here...
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

or this should get you right to a 97 Expy http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/proble...ervicemmy5.cfm

Well I just tried it and you have to fill in the year and make. For specific components choose the blank on the pull down. That way you'll see everything

Read the TSBs and see if any apply to the one your buying when you are test driving it---Bob

The vehicle above is one of many. Try refreshing. It goes by random but the Expy is exactly like mine.

Yeah, he's right -- I keep thinking this is a F-150 message board.

Sorry

These trucks also have defective G.E.M. modules that will not allow the 4 wheel drive to work at times or will not allow it to come out of 4 wheel drive. You have to stop the vehicle and turn the key off and on. There are special service messages for this problem. Ford does not have a fix yet..
I work for a division of Ford,in the extended warranty department. I see this a lot. Just my 2 cents worth.
