Question Did you have your 5.4 replaced?

OK, sounds like I'm paranoid but the more I read about the 5.4L engine having piston slaps and oild leaks, the more I wonder if I'm next. My 99 Expy now has 23K and no signs of any problems. The engine was built on 11-28-98.

I'd like to hear from both sides. Are there any 5.4L owners without any problems? It seems most posting have to do with folks with problems. I can't believe all the 5.4L engines from the Windsor plant have this defect. There must be tens of thousands of the 5.4L in the F-series and Expys alone.

Looking for peace of mind.

Cool

I have a 99 Expy that was built in 8/98. I have 22K on it now and have listened VERY carefully for the slap. It doesn't have it now. Nor have I had a problem with oil leaks (yet). The bigeest two problems I had were a booming sound at 65-75 MPH and my transfer case was messed up at the factory. Didn't know until I used it for firat time in snow back in Jan. Oh the compass started reading backwards at 21K. The unit on the mirror was replaced. But I still love the truck--Bob

I have a 99 F-150 5.4, I didn't really hear anything that sounded like Piston SLap, but figure I would take it in and have them verify it. Turns out I am getting a new engine. He stated that it was way out of tolerance. Just food for thought.

When was your truck built? How did you approach them if you didn't hear anything first? Now I'm stating to wonder. How did they verify the engine was out of tolerance? Mine was builte 8/98 (the truck that is)

I just left it there one night for the early bird service, and copied down word for word what the service bulletin from the NHTSA said. Called them about 11 the next morning and they said it was out of limits. Some thing like engine makes a tapping noise at start up when engine is cold.

THey seemed to be aware of what was going on they have replaced a couple so far.

Got a 98 Expy XLT 4X4 with a NEW FQR 5.4!

The new engine is fine, no slap on this one! You will know if you get slap! I had mine replaced at 49K on the extended warranty, WEW!

The replacement engine is MUCH stronger! I did have an oil leak from the installation, but it was a simple fix after 2 trips to the dealers! The remote mount oil filter lines did not connect to the new engine very well.... They replaced the line... So far, so good!
