Get someone to put a fuel gauge on the fuel rail and see if the fuel pressure regulator is mal****ioning. I had that happen to me in my old Bronco and mileage went in the toilet. Get it looked at because it will destroy the catalytic converter if it goes on too long.

 

The overhead console milage read out is cumulative if you have been doing all in town driving it will be very slow to update when you are traveling. It can be reset by pushing both buttons at the same time. My 98 Eddie Bauer 4x4 5.4 averages 12.1 around town & around 16.5 Highway When it was newer around town was like 12.5 and Higway was like low 17's high 16's
