2001 Navigator

I'm in the market for a new(used) vehicle to replace the wife's 97 Yukon that recently went over 200k miles. We looked at a 2001 Navigator and may get it but I read it needs premium fuel. This is making me think twice about it now. I've read about PCM calibration and was wondering if the Navigator's could be changed or adjusted so it could run on regular like the Expedition. Or just go ahead and use regular?

Does it say why it needs premium. it runs the same motors as the Expedition.

One of those Years the Navi got a slightly diferent (but samne 5.4L displacement) V-8 engine. They had the 300 HP iNTech V8, while the top Expy engine of that era had the 5.4L Triton V8 at 260 HP, if memory serves.

I don't recall the Navi needing Premium though... Wow.

Well, we'll all be paying $4.00 a gallon soon, a I guess 20 - 30 cents more per gallon will only push the knife in a little further.

Makes a $9.00 difference per fill up, from "E".

Is that the one with the 4 valve engine? I think they say 32V Northstar or something like that, in the back.

I thought I also read somewhere it needs premium, or something like that.

Dude! A comment like that deserves a lashing! Northstar is a caddy engine! Its a 32V InTech. Yes they required premium gas. Once you put a few tanks in though, you get used to it. Figure 30 cent more per gallon for 30 gallons = $9 a full fillup differental. Having a Nav, I'd personally recommend you get the newer 6 speed auto tranny nav and get much better mileage.

Sorry, I guess all I remember is the 32V, and Northstar was the first name that came to mind.

Looks like the deal is about to happen. With any used vehicle I'm a little nervous. I did my best to look in and under the vehicle and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Ran the VIN through Autocheck and came back clean although I do know they are not 100 percent accurate. Motor ran smooth and quiet. It felt very solid and tight on the road. And MAN what power for such a large rig!! Very strong right off idle, lots of torque which I much prefer over a high rpm motor.

Had the 01 Navigator for 2 weeks now. Doing fine so far. Opinions on what weight of conventional oil to use. I go back and forth on using 5w20 for winter then 5w30 during the summer OR 5w30 for winter and 10w30 for summer. Suggestions?

Were going into the 2009 year class and your looking at a 2001 Navigator which was probobly origionaly sold in the fall of 2000???
I asume this vehicle must have atleast 100,000 miles on it, why not try and find something newer that does not require premium gasoline like a 2003+ Navigator if thats what your hearts set on.
Better trans and no premium required, not to mention better looks wise inside and out.

Thanks for your concern but I would suggest never assume. I try not to. So far it has done fine with mid grade fuel. We were thinking of a newer model like you said but the price was never right. This 2001 model had 35k miles and was driven by an 80+ year old lady who recently passed away. Even though we wanted something a little newer, the low miles, price, and condition sold us on it.
