Paint bubbling on tailgate

I have a 2005 blue EB that is exhibiting paint bubbling on the tailgate.

Now the paint is chipping off and shows corrosion on the bare metal.

Has anyone else seen this? I'm sure it will be covered but it is annoying.

I think I might have noticed a little bit of bubbling on my tailgate as well, but the bubble hasn't "burst" so no rust yet.

I just found some bubbling too, on our 04 NBX. Ford's crappy paint and NH's sometimes excessive use of road salts (or whatever they are today) makes for a bad combination.

Your S.O.L. on coverage for this, the rust portion of the warranty is for rust thru, as in holes. Not chips, bubbling, etc.

07-2-9 PAINT BUBBLES AROUND LIFTGATE TRIM

Publication Date: January 23, 2007

FORD: 2003-2006 Expedition
LINCOLN: 2003-2006 Navigator

ISSUE:
Some 2003-2006 Expedition and Navigator vehicles may experience paint bubbling or lifting around the trim area on the liftgate. This can occur when the trim part moves on the paint surface because of climate temp changes and/or owner operation. Overtime these trim parts can rub through the paint surface and cause corrosion to start developing between the aluminum gate and paint.

ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Paint resurfacing will be necessary to correct the paint bubbling concern.
Add Mylar tape to the backside edge of the following liftgate trim parts, the license plate bucket for Navigator (Figure 1) and the license lamp applique for Expedition (Figure 2). The Mylar tape will act as a friction barrier between the paint surface and the trim components.

Make sure that the backside of the trim pieces listed in Step 2 are clean of any contaminates. This can be done by wiping the surface with a 50% solution of isopropyl alcohol and water.
Apply the Mylar tape to the backside edge of the trim component. It may be necessary to trim the tape after its been applied for a clean fit.
After applying the Mylar tape, follow installation procedure for each part as listed in the appropriate Workshop Manual, Section 501.

Is this covered under an extended warranty?

I have this on our 04 EB as well. Just bubbled a bit right now, top right hand side by the registration plate trim. I suspect I'm SOL also, as my extended warranty is only the ExtraCare one. Let's hear another one for Ford quality...

On a side note, I didn't think the rear door was steel. I tried to stick a "Support Our Troops" magnet ribbon on it, and it wouldn't stick anywhere.

It's not steel. Where the paint fell off mine it's white and chalky...aluminium

Same problem here, but just bubbling a bit, no break in the paint yet. I don't see any interaction with the tailgate touching anything, I wonder if it was just a bad paint job in that area?

This is on a 2004 EB btw.

Cool on the covered part, you must be under the 3 year/36000 miles. Our's is past that and the extended warranty wont cover it. Oh well, this POS will get traded in the near future anyway, so I don't care.

This is besides the point but my dad had a 05 expedition and the tires were bad and when he drove it the suv would shake and when he let go of the wheel it would vibrate, had 14k on it and ford said tire warranty runs out at 12. So he just sold it.

That's exactly what they told me. Even after they had replaced three of the tires 4 times. They suk.
