Thouroughly Impressed

I could not believe my eyes at work today. A 1998 Expedition XLT with the 4.6L came in for an oil change, and as I was filling out paperwork I looked at the odometer and it read 425,680.

In disbelief, I asked the customer if t was accurate and she said yes and that other than the transmission, everything was original.

I hope my truck lasts that long...

GEESH!!! If you assumed she bought it as soon as it came out in the fall of '97, that would still be an average of 42,568 miles per year!!! She must do alot of driving!!! Where I used to work, I could put over 25,000 miles a year on my truck, but she has me beat to death. If she is getting her oil changed every 3 to 5 thousand miles, that means she is getting hers changed 8 to 14 times a year! Wouldnt it be funny if the original tranny was replaced for something other than high mileage?

That is good. I have seen a lot of high mileage Fords, but none that high. My bro's 94' Exploder has 348K on original motor AND trans. A few F-150's in our company have 250k+ with new trans but motors that have never been opened.

I can believe 42K a year, I drive 33 miles each way + make a few 2K mile trips a year (like 1K miles in a day). Anyway, I rack up about 35K a year. Some guys I know that work the North FL area put 50K a year or more on their rides.

I used to drive 38 miles one way to work and make a 1300 mile round trip a year, plus local driving. I knew folks that had to go over 70 miles one way to work, and they dont carpool. Florida would be easy driving in the winter time, flat and virtually no ice or snow to be found. You guys ban hurricanes and I will move there!

That is impressive. My Dad's 1983 S-10 is creeping up on 1 million miles on the original engine. He has had the same Penzoil joint change out the oil every 3K miles since he bought it. That's something like 300-330 oil changes for the same vehicle. They should put a picture of him out front.

In my local paper, there's a 2007 EB with 37,000 miles on it for sale. Man, that's a lot of miles in one year.

I remember one car manufacturer used to have commercials featuring their vehicles that were turning over 1 million miles. Maybe it's worth contacting the regional Chevy manager in his area. He said the S-10 burns about 3 qts of oil between 3K mile changes. Still runs and has plenty of power, but it does shoot out a cloud of smoke when you start her up in the morning.

To those with long commutes it would seem normal. My longest commute was 38 miles, now down to 11. I had coworkers, though, that had commutes up to about 80 miles one way. Too much for me, and up here in Michigan east of the Lake, and the winter winds are brutal in the open areas. Hats off to those with rides that can last that long with little or no repairs. My truck did fine when I had that long commute but being closer to home for my family was too much to ignore.
