Fuel issue?

Unfortunately let my '98 Navigator run very low on fuel twice recently, to the point where it was hard to start. Tank is completely full now, however the Check Engine light came on yesterday and I'm idling very rough, in both drive and neutral. It stalled out on me at one stop sign.

Should I change the fuel filter first, or have I possibly caused a bigger problem by allowing it to run so low?

Thanks in advance.

The only thing that I can offer is that from my understanding, the fuel pump is lubricated using gasoline.

So if you run empty, it can possibly cause fuel pump damage.

I'm sure someone else will chime in with more information.

Good luck.

Get the codes read by Autozone (free) and look them up to find out what the CEL is saying. Save a lot of time and $$ over guessing about what is wrong. Probably nothing bad. Just get the codes read and find out what its telling you.

Welcoe to the forums!!!!!!!

Good advice from Waterman. If your Navi has quite a few miles it would do well to change the filter anyway.

Thanks for the quick input fellas, much appreciated.

I went to Autozone today and had the errors read, P0171 and P0174 both came up (bank too lean). Listed as the probable causes were fuel condition of MAF sensor fault. I'm going to change the fuel filter regardless because it's been a while, I'm just praying the fuel pump isn't shot.

Any more potential ideas?

Again, thanks in advance.

Dont fret about frying the fuel pump. One or two times runnin low/out shouldnt kill it.

Good luck.

I hear ya Tim, thanks.

Changed the filter yesterday, still having the same issue. From what I've read the next step is to clean the injectors and then proceed from there if that doesn't work. Anymore ideas from the vets here?
