Expedition NBX?

I did an oil change yesterday on an '04 Expedition. I assumed it was an XLS because it was the basic model (cloth seats, black plastic door handles and lower panels, no fender flares, etc.). It was 4WD, though.

Then, when I was writing down the tag number, I noticed the badge underneath where it said Expedition said NBX.

What is NBX? I looked it up on forddirect.com with no results....

No Boundaries edition. My brother has an NBX Explorer, but it is quite nice. It came with 17 inch wheels, nice neoprene-like seats, and carbon fiber interior accents. It was a 2wd version- the NBX package is meant for the outdoors type people.

That Expi may have faux badging though...

Hmm... well this one seemed like the base model except the 4WD. It dis have 17" wheels. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, though. I was in a hurry and working on like 4 cars at once.

Anyway, thanks for the info. Sounds pretty cool.

NBX isn't anything special. It's basically an XLT with a few extra items. All I can think of is skid pads, different side steps and rubber/winter style floor mats. The nice thing about the one my wife drives is the 3.73 optional gears that are in it. Sure helps move this heavy pig....

Ah, so it's basically an Expedition FX4, except it goes by another name.

By the way that's the EXACT one that I worked on.

Yeah, in 2003, when Ford redesigned the Expy, they had a FX-4 option. THe following year it was renamed NBX.

Interesting, I didn't know that about the Expedition- thanks for the info!

Just as an though, the Explorer NBX is a different trim level completely. I found it to be very nice, and not as plain looking as that Expedition. Not only did it have some sweet sweets, carbon fiber panels, heavy duty floormats, and 17-inch alloy wheels, but it also had a sweet NBX style roof rack that really sets it apart from the rest. I will try and get a pic of my brother ride someday...it's one heck of a nice Explorer.

Technically, the Expedition NBX was a different trim level too. To me, it was more desirable for what it didn't have than for what it had. Ford really did build it for those who might actually take the Expy off road.

The only thing I really didn't care for was the fake chrome plastic-covered steel wheels. Ended up with an aluminum set off an F150. The lighter rims made a noticeable difference in braking and even handling.

Can relate to those chrome clads, but my wife likes them so.
