XCal2 on a 2003-04 Expy??
Ok, I've read all the reviews for the XCal2 on the F150s, but seldom see anyone with an Expy that has one (there are a few). I am looking for anyone that has one on their 2003-2004 Expy w/ 5.4 2v engine. I am specifically looking for this application as it would be the one that I would be doing (mine is a 2004). I know the Expys and F-150s have alot of differences (weight, gears, etc.) and I would like any feedback from someone with the Xcal2 on the Expedition.
xcalibrator on '04 expi
I have an '04 Expi eddie bauer 4x4 5.4. I ordered an excalibrator just after I purchsed the vehicle, and we found that the '04 engines/computers have several variations to them, and I fried my computer. After getting towed to the dealership, they installed a new computer for me, and I have not medded with it since. Everyone I dealt with was very helpful in trying to solve the issue, and they really wanted to make it right for me, but I ended up sending the unit back for a refund after learning that there were a few too many unknowns with the '04 expi at that time.
The bugs may/probably have been worked out by now, but I haven't tried again. The gentleman I purchased the excalibrator from (I think it was Troyer Performance) could not have been nicer. He even offered to troubleshoot the problem and get me a loaner car while they were looking into it. I would definately do business with him again, but I was not in the position to help out with the troubleshooting at the time.
Good luck

eh, it was a carryover from my lincoln ls. i got it dirt chaep awhile back, so i say it is worth every penny. its good because of the multiple tunes it can hold, which will be useful in my "project."
Mine's a 98, but after changing from a custom tune from diablo to a custom tune from troyer, I netted another 26HP. Well worth the money. And well worth the extended power gains as well

03 Expy w/ Xcal2 and AF1 intake
I bought my Ex used w/ 27K miles. Near mint. Hated the stock driveability. Sluggish, couldn't accelerate to pass. I got the xcal2 from Troyer to help w/ driveability and hp. Also was hoping for better mpg. Well, I got much better hp and driveability. Nice acceleration, sometimes it feels like I am holding it back.
Unfortunately my mpg's went down a little. My long term average using the 93 octane per tune is about 15, that includes mostly highway. I think there maybe something else going on in there. Before tuning, I once got 18 mpg using regular gas and a dirty air filter (just after I bought it).
The AF1 CAI may also be contributing to the mpg's. I dunno.
One thing I found is that the Exp is limited in what you can modify using the Xcal after it is tuned. Not much difference in shift point changes (TP stated that a shift would need to be added), cannot increast timing in 93 (probably maxed out). I can change richness level, but didn't notice much. You can check for codes which is good, can change tire size settings for larger tires, same with changing gears.
all in all, I like having it. It should be tuned that way from the factory. Shame I had to spend $600 just to get it to run nicely. Could have put that into new tires. Oh yea, I forgot, I had to put new tires on it when I bought it. Brakes too. At 27k miles, the OEM Continentals were shot. Put OEM size Cooper's on. Nice tire. Next time I get bigger ones.
I don't like the "soccer mom" look of the vehicle. I'd like to lift it w/ larger tires. However, it is the most comfortable vehicle I've driven, and the utility of that 3rd folding seat is par excellence!
I would say get the tuner and the intake and keep an eye on your gas.

Waterman,
Thanks for the info! I am planning on getting the Xcal2 in the next couple of months. I'll watch my MPG and let you know. I also replaced the Conticraps on my Expy. Only, I replaced mine at 6K because of vibrations and terrible wet traction
. I love the Expy, but I'm just trying to find a little more power
. Thanks again.

I replaced those sorry *** continentals the week after I bought mine, and the tires were all but brand new. You should get better mileage than that though. I can get near 15 MPG with all the crap I have on mine, you should get 105MPG in comparison
