I don't believe they are cable driven if thats what you're asking.

 

Our '97 w/4R70W (4.6L engine) was a combination of both. There was a gear in the tranny that, when turned, generated an electrical pulse that was sent to the speedo system. After installing larger tires, I changed the gear in the tranny to correct the speedo.

Not sure if the 5.4L engine with E4OD was the same.
