'00 5.4 Expy Slow Starting w/ New battery

I have an 2000 5.4 4x4 Expedition. For over a year now, it has started to turn over very slowly, especially bad when it is cold. I figured it was the battery not performing very well. It seems that when I turn the key, the first crank is very slow, and then it gets some momentum and cranks a few times, then starts. I finally replaced the battery with a much higher CCA (1050 I think), and it doesn't make any difference. Cold temps definitely make it turn slowed. WHat else could it be? Thanks for any ideas.

Have you had the alt checked?

You can check the alt for output voltage with a simple voltmeter. Also, it could be a sign that the starter is slowly dying. Start with the obvious (as you did with the battery) and move on to the more important starting and charging system components

I asked a mechanic about this issue when I had a plug job a few weeks ago. He said the alternator was ok, though I don't know what test he did. And the battery showed better numbers than it is even rated for. I haven't ever had a starter do that sort of thing.

You'd be suprised what can happen. The wire that runs to the starter can begin to corrode inside of the insulation and cause low voltage at teh starter, whereas the voltage at the battery is fine.

My guess it's the starter. I've had this happen(the starter turning slow for awile) but not for a whole year. Mine did it a month max. This was also on a motor with 11 or so to 1 compression so I'm sure that played a role. I'd replace it.....
