Difficulty finding the true weight of my 98 Ex. The door says lik 3xxx Front and lik 3xxx rear. Then it says like Gross weight 7000 pounds. Does the truck weigh 7000 pounds?

 

I think the numbers you see are the weight rating of the axles (not how much each axle weighs). Gross weight is another rating- the entire vehicle shouldn't exceed that number. These values are important when hauling a lot of people &/or cargo.

You'll also see a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) value. This is the maximum weight of the Expedition (and all contents) plus the weight of any towed trailer.

The only way to really know how much your Expy weighs is to take it to some scales. Many truck stops, garbage dumps, recyclers have scales that you can pay a few dollars to use.

 

The listed weight on my 98 Gator is 7200 pounds, people excluded. Figure loaded, with rear seat and four occupants, you're pushing 8000 pounds down the road

 

1997 2wd Expedition 5.4, 1/2 tank gas, third seat not in, rear aircond, rear air suspension,,, 4950lbs the last time I went thru the scales at the trash dump. So figure 4750 without my butt sitting in it.

 

7000-8000 lb's for an Expy or Gator? Uh, no, not anywhere close. The Gator is a little wavier, but by only a few hundred lbs.

My 2000 2WD on the scales was between 5500-5800 depending on load and gas. I can't fin the weigh slip, but it seems like it was right at 5700 whn I had it and my boat weighed separatly. I doubt you could find an Expy or Gator, 2WD or 4WD even with a full tank that weighs 6000 lbs.

My Excurison however, DOES weigh in the 8000 lbs range. It's nice to not be 2000 lbs outweighed by the boat anymore.
