What to look for in a 04 Expy

My brother has a 3rd kid on the way and wants to trade a Grand Cherokee Laredo for an 04 Expy XLT with 15,000 miles on it. Problem is that he is 250 miles away and want's me to check it out for him. Now I'm somewhat familliar with the typical 01 Supercrew (see sig) problems that I should lookout for, but what are the typical hicks that 04 Expys have.

also a few questions:
Do all 04 Expys have a 5.4L?

Did the 04 Expy get a complete overhaul like the F150 Did in 04?

Do 04 XLT Expys have 17" Wheels?

What sections in the F150 Forums are closely related to the Expys (I can assume the "General Care and detailling" section is pretty much applicable

I told my brother to checkout this web site so he'll also be reading the replys.

Hey bro

Thanks guys in advance.

No, 03 and 04 had either 4.6 or 5.4 2v, all 05 and newer have 5.4 3v

No, it got a complete overhaul in 03

yes, as do 03, 05 and 06

you can kinda group 03 and 04 together, and 05 and 06 together. The 05 and 06 got a updated instrument cluster too.

I agree. Personally, I'd look for one with a 5.4. I think I would try to avoid the 03's as it sometimes take a little while to get all of the bugs worked out of a completely new mode. Also, the unpainted plastic cladding on the XLT models is very prone to fading.

What to look for

Beside checking out everything out, problem areas been..

Door lock buzzing when being locked - solenoids seem to fail. Been through
couple of them

Rear end noise/leaking - in 2wd mode. In AWD or 4WD mode, hum from front axle. TSBs out for them, see if it's been fixed.

Snapping noise from rear half shaft area when going from D to R and back to D again with brakes on. Again TSB.

Squeal from front idler pulleys on engine when cold start (better if you can test when it's damp). Changed 3 of them so far.

I still have one power window that's a bit clunky.
