97 Expedition Subwoofer

It seems that the speaker has blown. It sounds raspy and the foam speaker has seperated from the shell. How do you get the subwopfer out?I removed the screws around the speaker but the speaker itself does not come out. Do I have to remove all the trim pieces to get it out?Any help is appreciated

you have to take the whole side quarter trim panel out of the way, (you prob already have it out) then take the whole subbox out, there is a bolt through the back of the box into the magnet area of the speaker.

Any ideas on where to get a new sub? I called Ford and he wasnt even sure that they still stocked this part. Come on the truck isnt that old. I've been to Circut City. Best Buy and Tweeter and noone makes an 8 inch sub that small.

http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/expedition97.html MTX and JL Audio both make drop in replacements with built in amps that supposidly sound much better.

Glad I found this thread, my speaker is doing the same thing and I was thinking of upgrading it. I would like to know the price as well...I will do some more searching and post up if I find it.

Is there a way to get a 10" in there?

I was searching around and crutchfield actually carries a MTX 10" sub that will fit in there, you can buy just the box only also.
Box/w sub.

So it is a replacement 8"?

Can the factory box be ported to fit a 10" I am really thinking the options will open at the 10" mark, there is a TON of speakers in the 10" range.

How do you like the Rockford replacement?

It is an 8" speaker. I would say a replacement but not factory. I would also say that if you want a 10" sub then look for a different sub box because I wouldnt cut up a factory one because it a molded piece. I am older now and have been thru all the high power stereo equipment in the past. I just wanted something to replace the blown speaker and YES I think the Rockford Fosgate does sound better than stock. Hope this helps.

My 98 did the same there is a bolt through the backside helping to hold the speaker in I was able to find a replacement at a local stereo shop (aftermarket) I think it is a 8" it wont have the rear holddown bolt but it will work fine mine's been in there over a year still works great dont think I paid more than $40 for the replacement

I left mine in. I just cut the wires and put in an LOC unit and ran that to the amp etc and have 2 12's and my expy BUMPS pretty hard. Not the loudest but you can for sure hear it with the windows rolled up if you the car next to me. You can actually hear it across the street or before I actually pull up....

So when I want to hear the mucis its there but when I want it down, I can. It still sounds clean and nice while low.....

I say screw that and just get a custom box made for your space needs and have better tunes....
