Signal Mirrors

I have a 99 Expedition with Signal Mirrors. They are starting to become distorted, which I recall was a problem with these. I know I have seen the manufacturer of these mirrors named with comments that they were very helpful in supplying replacements for very little cost. Anyone recall the manufacture for these.

Dvds, do a search on Muth here to read all the good stories.
They replaced mine twice for free while under basic warranty.
I think those days are long passed now and you will be set back a couple of bills.

My orginals started peeling after maybe 18 months.
The second set lasted less than twelve.

Muth told me some defective mirrors were made I was unlucky enough to get two sets.

The third set is fine after 4.5 years.

Have you been living with the bubbling/peeling or is this just happening?
I can't understand how a set would go bad after this long. Doesn't make me feel good.
Is your suv always garaged?

I had the same problem & replaced them with the heated mirrors. The wiring is already there for them. Good luck

These are the original mirrors, I have had this truck since new. The mirrors are just now starting to peel. The truck is always garaged, and generally isn't driven much during the week. Its mostly a trip vehicle, so maybe that helps explain why they went six years before starting to go bad.

I have Emailed Muth Mirrors, I hope they are still willing to help. How difficult was it to replace the mirrors? I am reasonably handy, but far from a crack mechanic.

'Crack' being the operative word.
Dealer did mine.
There should be some 'how to' posts here somewhere and they should install just like an XLT except they would have a plug-in electrical.

Doesn't Muth still have their 1-800 number?
If they want to charge you retail, I think the online store carries them and are competitively priced.

Sorry for your misfortune but, I'm glad to hear you had a garaged vehicle.
It leads me to believe there were good and bad mirrors not just all bad eventually.

I'll let you how it turns out. I'm still hoping Muth will cut me some sort of deal on the replacements, anything will help. If it looks like more than I want to tackle, I will take it somewhere, probably a body shop nearby, I know the owner, he would likley help me out. There is always the dealer too.

Ford knows about this problem - there is a TSB for it (I don't
have the # handy). However, they won't address it since you
are out of warranty.

Muth isn't doing that free program anymore, so you are
probably better off just picking up the part at the dealer.
The mirror itself is like $175 or the whole assembly $300.

This is really something ford should be fixing for free. Especially
since a defective mirror is a safety hazard.

According the the Muth website, they sell the mirror replacement kits for just over $200.00, which of course is not installed. Haven't heard from them yet, but even if not free, maybe they will discount them. I can always hope.

I heard from Muth this morning, they are still willing to do a no cost replacement for the mirrors. I'm impressed, they were most helpful.

You are one lucky man. Others did not get that answer.
Remember who you talked to and do not delay.

Since you made out good on the material, you can spring for the labor with less pain.

They sent me replacement mirrors (glass only) with a reusable box because they wanted the bad mirrors returned.

I guess they have been able to determine how much this will set them back. I belive they only made the mirrors for Ford in 1999.
I don't think the 1998 had signal mirrors and in 2000 Ford went with signals on the mirror cover instead of in the glass.

Muth knows how many mirrors it supplied Ford in 1999 and how many complaints they got back. From 1999 to 2002 they were all under 36/36 warranty. I guess in 2003-2004 they were a little paranoid on the percentage of of bad 1999 mirrors, maybe now they have relaxed.

I know they are aware that the failure is not due to owner abuse.

Congrats.

I already have the process going, they are doing the same, replacing the glass and sending reusable boxes to return the old ones. I am understandable very pleased they are willing to do this. New ones should be in the mail today or tomorrow, I let no moss grow on this one.

He is right! I just got off the phone with Muth, and they are going to send me new Mirrors. They charge your CC for new mirrors, but when you return the old ones they will credit you back the charge!

DvDs you are the MAN (or woman if you are) for bringing this back to light!

Thats exactly the drill, charge the CC and issue a credit upon return of the old mirrors. Did you talk to Sue this morning? She was quite pleasant and helpfull, and helped brighten what was looking to be a fairly gloomy Monday morning.

Raoul,

Who did you get to replace your mirrors? I have the new ones, but no one seems willing to pop the old ones out and put the new ones in. The dealer wants a fortune, $160.00 and refuses to guarantee their work. I looked at them, and may try it myself, but I'm a bit reluctant, after reading the warning about the possibility of breaking the plastic holding pins, which don't seem to be replaceable.
