engine HP and TQ specs?
engine HP and TQ specs?
I'm looking for a 2000 or 2001 Expedition. I know I have two engines to look at. I've driven a 2000 with the 4.6 and was surprised with the power. I have a 2001 F150 SuperCrew with the 5.4 and use it to tow our 4000 lb camper with no problems.
My main dilema is, do I save the money, go with the 4.6 and add a computer chip, K&N and Exhaust vs. getting the 5.4 and doing a chip and the K&N.
We'll tow the camper maybe 8-10 times a year with the Expedition, usually no more than 200 miles each way.
Also, are there any mechanical issues/problems that I should know about with the 2000 and 2001 Expeditions?
Thanks All.

4.6: 220 HP @ 4750 RPM : 265 FT/LB @ 4000 RPM (In 2000 or 01 a 4.6 wa avail with 240/280)
5.4: 260 HP @ 4250 RPM : 350 FT/LB @ 3000 RPM
Personally, for any extended towing what so ever, I'd recommend the 5.4L
4.6's and 5.4's 97-03 have a tendancy to blow the spark plug out of the head, taking out the threads. Here is the best repair kit so far: http://www.timesert.com/Triton-repair.html. Also some 98-01 5.4's were machined improperly, and the head bolts were torqued improperly, and can leak oil between the head and the block. These are not "common" problems, but do happen enough to make you want to really look at and research the truck before you buy.
And some 5.4's have been known to leak oil from the head gasket, so that is another area you'll want to check. Not sure of the years though.

I agree the 4.6 is too small and underpowered for the expy...but the 5.4 in no way is underpowered, as I've had a 98' eddie bauer expy, and I can smoke off the tires. In the rain its dam near impossible to keep it from fish tailing....Hell mine is the 235 HP version of the 5.4 because it is the non P.I. heads engine. I have dual exhaust and the K/N kit on it so I'm gussing i have the same amount of power the 2001 5.4 has. Get the 5.4....you'll love the way it pulls your trailer around...I've towed with mine and its great.
If you can swing it, try to get the largest engine you can afford in any vehicle.
You'll just end up spending $$$ later trying to make the smaller engine more powerful, so get the big one to start.
I've fallen into this trap before... You'll love the 5.4.
