Towing with my 99 - is this too much?
Towing with my 99 - is this too much?
I am towing the Lightning down to TN from Ohio... 432 miles. I have a 1999 Expedition EB (4X4 w/ towing package) that I am using to tow an enclosed trailer - 4100 lbs. The truck weighs in around 4600 lbs. I know that this exceeds 7500 lbs, but could it be done safely?
Thanks.
Thanks.
I'm assuming that you mentioned 7,500 lbs. because your Expy has the 3.73 axle ratio. 8,700 lbs.? My understanding is that Ford recommends a weight distributing hitch (which the factory hitch is not) for loads over 4,000 lbs. Will the Expy be loaded with passengers and/or gear? More weight...
This sounds like a job for an F-350.

It will be just myself in the truck, and a bag with some clothes. The trailer has electric brakes that I could wire in, but I am thinking that this thing will be far too much to tow safely.... do not want to have a chance of hurting the trailer or the Lightning inside
8700#??? I towed our boat that tops out at about 7500# and I wouldn't do any more than that; and I had mine modified.
I would definetly want WD setup with that. Boats are generally very well balanced and mine was fine even at high speed. A box trailer like that I would not tow without WD equipement. Even with WD, the weight alone would make me scratch my head with a 4x4 Expy........
