Question Shift interlock

I'm having problems right now on my '98 Expedition with the shift interlock. I'm having to step down hard on the brake 4 or 5 times before I get the "click" that allows me to shift out of Park.

I'm thinking it's probably the brake light switch...does anyone have experience with this? Also, if it is the b/l switch, that's about a $20 part, but not sure if it's an easy DIY repair, or if it will need to be done by Ford service.

If not the b/l switch, what else might it be?

Thanks for any and all replies!

Cool Re: Shift interlock

i was having the same problem, i checked the plug harness that connects the brake light switch, one of the wires from my 97 expedition was bearly hoding on to the switch, ,i guess from pressing and relaseing the brake after a few years it tens to brake.

i just spliced a piece of wire with a speaker connector and that solved my problem. very easy job to do.

Thanks...I took care of this last week, and just like you, it was the wire. When I pulled the brake switch from the harness, one of the wires on the harness broke. So I spliced in a piece then soldered back on to the harness...the switch itself was still good.

Thanks again for the input.
