Does any one know why there is such a large difference in towing capacities between the 4.6 and the 5.4 2003 expys? Is it just the differences in engine power or are there other differences?

 

The 8950 lb tow rating for the 2003 5.4L expedition is with the heavy duty tow package otherwise the tow rating is 6000 lbs with the 5.4L . You cannot get the 4.6L with the class IV tow package which includes wiring for trailer brakes, super duty radiator, larger trans cooler 22 plate vs 14 plate standard. and a class IV hitch.

I beg to differ. My C model XLT Premium came standard with a Class IV tow package, Heavy duty transmission cooler and Radiator. It says so on the window sticker and the owners manual.

Yes,
Mine has the 4.6L. It also has a transmission cooler and what i'm assuming is an engine oil cooler. It is rated to tow 5000lbs according to the owners manual. By the way my wife loves the truck.
