The only thing I dont like about the pre-03 models are:
- you cant fold the 3rd row flat with the touch of a switch
-3rd row is smaller
-interior is not as nice
Other than that, its great.
I know the 03/04's have a center of gravity 8" lower than the previous models. Great for not flipping by *bad* for off-roading. I still miss my 98 Expedition. I still like the looks better.
Hows the 32v V8? Any more guts? Then again, isn't the Nav much heavier? May not notice more power.

you are correct about the third row seats.
honestly, the interior of the older navigator is nicer than the interior of the new expy. The front and rear center consoles have real leather lids, and the seating surfaces are all real leather, even the third row. In expy's built after 3-03, the front seats top headrest patch is vinyl, the only thing in the second row seats thats real leather is the "white" sections , (the brown sections are all vinyl), and the entire 3rd seat is vinyl. Also, the older navigator dash and door panels are " soft vinyl covered" , not the hard plastic of the expy.
It has its trade offs, but the price was the best deal maker.
