Update on '03 Brake Dusting

I was at my local Ford dealer this morning and asked the Parts Mgr. about the front brakes pads. He said there is a TSB on the dust issue (duhh) and that he has the new "reformulated" pads in stock! He said it will not eliminate the brake dust, but it will reduce it. He also said that they are very THICK pads (while holding his thumb and index finger about an inch apart).

Anyway just thought I would share that info as a lot of you are having a hard time getting answers or finding a dealer that has the pads.

Sammy

Yea, but did he also tell you that ford will not replace any under warranty for the dust problem? They have promised a fix for over a year now, and come to find out its not covered??? The bad thing is that up until a couple of months ago, i was a master ford tech at my dealership for 9 years. I left the auto industry due to the diminishing pay from ford, and now have to deal with diminishing warranty on my truck that has 8000 miles and terrible looking wheels and running boards. Not to mention that in its 8000 miles its been through 4 rear axles due to loud gear noise.

thanks a lot ford.

PS, i recieved my ford masters awards about a month before i left, and my plaque had my name mis-spelled, my trophy had come apart in shipping, and the front fell off my toolbox magnet as i was packing my stuff up to leave the dealership. 9 years, and it ended like that, haha.

They told me that it would be taken care of at no charge since there is a TSB on it...

Hope things get better for you soon.

Thanks, things are definately better, better job in a better field with better pay.

Its great that your dealership is giving you the pads for free, mine is supposed to also, since i still have some tight ties there. But what makes me mad is that the TSB definately says that the new pads are NOT to be installed on a warranty ticket due to dust complaints. It is an information only TSB, i will post it if i can still get into my online account with ford.

Article No.
04-1-1 BRAKES - BRAKE DUST - REVISED BRAKE LININGS - VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 12/18/2003

Publication Date: January 5, 2004

FORD: 2003-2004 EXPEDITION
LINCOLN: 2003-2004 NAVIGATOR

ISSUE:
Customer dissatisfaction with brake dust level on vehicles produced before 12/18/2003.

The brake linings on 2003-2004 Expedition/Navigator vehicles are designed to interact with the brake rotors in such a way as to keep the rotors smooth, minimizing rotor runout and thickness variation. The brake dust that is generated as a result of this interaction does not indicate a performance concern with the vehicle's brake system, and is considered a normal condition by Ford Motor Company.

Ford Motor Company recognizes, however, that some customers may object to brake dust for appearance reasons. Effective 12/18/03, the brake linings on Expedition/Navigator have been revised. The revised linings will generate less dust. The revised linings are also being made available for service, as Service Kit 4L1Z-2001-BA. This kit contains BOTH front and rear linings. A coordinated front and rear lining change is required in order to avoid making the vehicle noncompliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 135. Do not mix the parts in the 4L1Z-2001-BA kit with any other brake linings.

Per the Warranty and Policy Manual, parts and labor needed to maintain the vehicle due to normal wear and tear are the responsibility of the vehicle owner, and are not covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Because brake dust is due to normal wear and tear, replacing brake linings for a dust condition is not covered under bumper-to-bumper coverage. For 2003 MY Navigator customers the Lincoln Commitment covers normal brake wear (but not brake dust) for 3 years/36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Some ESP plans may also cover worn brake linings. Consult OASIS to see if brake linings are covered as a provision of the customer's plan. Again, brake linings may be replaced for wear, but replacement of linings for a brake dust condition is not covered by either the New Vehicle Warranty, Lincoln Commitment, or ESP.

ACTION:
Replace brake linings, and ancillary parts if necessary, with revised brake linings.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Follow instructions included in Kit 4L1Z-2001-BA and Workshop Manual Sections 206-03 and 206-04.

NOTE: A COORDINATED FRONT AND REAR LINING CHANGE IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO AVOID MAKING THE VEHICLE NONCOMPLIANT WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD 135. DO NOT USE THE 4L1Z-2001-BA PART NUMBER WITH ANY OTHER REAR BRAKE LINING.

NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO MACHINE THE ROTORS BEFORE INSTALLING THE NEW LININGS, UNLESS OTHERWISE DIRECTED BY THE WORKSHOP MANUAL.

NOTE: VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE JULY 15, 2003 MAY REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE HOLD-DOWN CLIP, AND RETAINING PINS, THE FIRST TIME THE BRAKE LININGS ARE REPLACED. SERVICE KIT 4L1Z-2001-BA KIT CONTAINS DETAILS ON HOW TO DETERMINE IF THESE PARTS MUST BE CHANGED. YOU MAY WISH TO ORDER THESE PARTS ALONG WITH THE BRAKE LINING KITS, TO AVOID REPAIR DELAYS.

I immediately noticed that it said BEFORE 12/18/2003... does that mean that they have changed the pad at the plant too?

yes, so 2004s built after that date already have them.

put it this way, if you had a 2004 built 12-17, ford wants you to pay for them, built the next day, you get them.

On behalf of everyone with brake dust concerns...maybe you have enough free time wash your vehicle after every 50 miles, but I don't.

Interesting way to look at it I suppose... Certainly seems to be totally true though...

Thanks for the insight K-triton!

How can you find out what date the vehicle was built on? I know my 2004 Expedition was built sometime during 12-03. The radiator shows a bar code sticker of 12-12-03 and the valve covers show a sticker date of 12-16-03 I am going to be really PO'd if I missed the new pads by 1 or 2 days.
