whining noise when cold

A friend of mine just bought a 2001 Expy with a 5.4. He says he has noticed a whine that sounded like a p/s whine. The noise went away after 6-7 miles. He says it's not the belt slipping. Any ideas? He has 47,000 miles on it.

Where is the sound coming from? Does it change with engine speed or vehicle speed? I had a noise like that that turned out to be the pinion seal. Took the stealer 3 trys to fix it.

said it doesn't sound like it's from the rear. Thinks it has something to do with the steering

Could be the power steering pump. Mine whines a bit in very cold weather. So do I, as a matter of fact.

Yep, it's normal and your on the money with the P/S. Even running synthetic on mine, it's a little quieter but when it's cold, it whines for a little bit.......

FamilyRide,
Are you running Amsoil ATF in your p/s? I haven't swapped mine yet in the p/s and will maybe recommend this to my buddy for the whine.

PaulC,
You would hate it here in MN. This week -12F not counting the windchill. I whined a little myself.

Actually I still have Mobil 1 in it. I started using Amsoil after I did the flush.

Since mine's already changed, it'd be just as easy to buy my Expy and not have to worry about it. ( shameless plug )

That was a cheap plug. Why you selling if I may ask? You've done a lot to it.

Well, looks like I'm actually trading it. I hate to because it's been an awesome vehicle. I have to say probably the best I've ever owned and it's still 100% solid.

Why? Lost my mind I guess. Watch my sig. in the next day or 2 and you'll see why.
