Buying a used '99 or '00
Well,
It looks like I'll soon be buying a used '99 or '00 Expedition. After reading a lot (including this forum) and checking into them, they seem to be a decent SUV.
The models that we will be considering will be either XLTs or EBs, with mileage around 60K to 80K. Trying to go for the 5.4 engine. Is there anything specific that I should look out for, and are there any huge maintenance headaches creeping up at the higher mileages (say 100K)?
Thanks in advance for your time!

I'm looking into getting rid of mine, its a 2000 with 5.4, tow, load leveling suspension, large gas tank, sport package, XLT, perfect condition, perfectly maintained, just turned 66K miles. It has the R100 trans, oil cooler, trans cooler, abs, airbags all the good stuf. White on 2 tone grey, I need $17K for it. email me if you are interested @ aaronvanwagner@sbcglobal.net
I bought my 99 two years ago with 80k on it. I went through my wish list when trying to decide, really just wanted the 5.4. About the only way I could get it at the time was with an EB. Have 120k on it now. It does have the "dreaded" oil leak on the back of the passenger side head. I ask at each oil change if they see anything, response is "just a very slight leak". Nothing reaches the ground. I swapped all fluids over to synthetics when I bought it. Recently the abs light started coming on. I will check the rear wheel sensor that is mentioned here. Look to see it there has been regular maintenance but really they are a solid truck. Just redid the front brakes at 118k. Also replaced the rear wiper motor, about $75. I can see driving this truck way beyond 200k.

Thanks guys, for the replies.
Seems like the Triton engine is a strong one!
I cross-posted this next question in the Towing section as well:
The only towing I would do with it is to borrow my parents' 23' Airstream once or twice a year, which weighs 3500# dry, 4500# full. With a regular load of two adults, one small child and regular "stowage", would I be straining the 4.6 too much?

Yes, I think it is asking a little too much from a 4.6. Particularly, if hill-climbing is involved.

Well guys, today I put a deposit down on a used '00 Expedition XLT. My mechanic found a couple of things wrong with it (Transmission input seal leak, odometer backlight cuts in and out) that the Ford dealership is going to fix for me in their shop (I asked for a copy of the work order for my records when they are finished).
Thanks to all you guys on this forum, you were a great help!
It's got the 5.4, AWD 4x4, 59K, CD changer, tow package, 3rd row seat, factory tint,, keyless/keypad entry, lighted running boards, power driver's seat, rear heat/ac and is a greyish medium blue. Body is perfectly straight, no dents/dings at all.
I noticed it also has an air deflector on the back, to deflect air over the rear window. Painted the same as the body, looks very nice... factory option?
