Easiest way to determine diff is to look at the metal tag on the rear diff. It will have a 975 for 9.75in rear and either a 331 or 373 depending on if you have the 3.31 or the 3.73 gear.

 

Here's a little primer on Expy axle codes:

17 = 3.31 non-limited slip
19 = 3.55 non-limited slip
H6 = 3.73 limited slip
H7 = 3.31 limited slip
H9 = 3.55 limited slip

Make sure that you use the appropriate additive for limited slip differentials.

As a 1997 5.4 4x4 Expedition, your transmission should be an E40D. Take a look at the "TR" section on the sticker on the driver's door. If the letter "E" is printed below "TR", I'm right.
