Question Trip Meter problem

A few months ago I was having a problem with my trip meter. Every once in awhile, after I finished filling up the Navi, the trip meter wouldn't light up. After driving around for about 5 minutes or so, it would light back up, and then I could reset it and it would be fine. When I had the truck in service for something else, I mentioned it to them, but they couldn't get it to do it, because they weren't filling it up.

Well, now lately it's doing it all the time. I wll get in the truck in the morning, and it won't light up. Then I filled her up, and it didn't light up for awhile. Now it's doing more frequently and not after I fill her with gas.

Any ideas what this could be? A fuse? The bulb? It does still keep track of the miles while it's not lit, so it's working properly in that sense.

My warranty has now expired, so I am trying to fix this on my own.

Thanks!

Hey NaviGirl, long time no see.

I haven't heard of this one in a while. If you do a search on odometer light you'll probably find a few threads about the problem. It seems the only answer is to have the cluster replaced.

I had a similar problem on a GM car, pulled the cluster and re-soldered 3 100 OHM resistors which solved it; but since my '98 has a mechanical odometer, and nobody with the problem has let me at their truck with a soldering gun we'll never know if it is a do-it-yourself fix.

Most people with your problem buy a cluster off EBay with about the right milage on it. The swap isn't too had as a DIY.

Good Luck.

PS: The attached link is probably the most comprehensive on the subject.

Yeah, it's been awhile since I have been on the board.

Thanks for your reply....I am headed to do that search now and see what I come up with. Hopefully there will be something good.

I am sure my hubby and I can figure it out...he has some soldering skills as well...so it shouldn't be too bad.

I am wondering if I should wait until it stops working completly

Thanks again

Hello

My 99 Expy does the same thing on the odometer light - the dealership checked it out when they were doing some other work (replacing another coil pack) and they came up with a $300 estimate. Replace the cluster and labor. They told me that if the guages are working correctly that the entire cluster had to be replaced because the cluster only has one plug that goes to it. So it's not like the odometer has a seperate plug that came loose and caused the problem.... so we are waiting on that one....

Hope that helps (not good news - but news)
Fred
