Rumble noise coming from the rear?

I am having a terrible problem pinpointing the noise that comes from the rear of my vehicle while driving. If you can follow this: When the Expedition is at about 2000 rpm's, the vehicle will shift gears at about 40 mph. I will hear a deep rumble for about a second(like you would hear when you veer onto the shoulder of the highway onto the rumble strips (aka "wakeup strips")) and then an even more pronounced rumble when the vehicle again shifts into the next gear at 55 mph. It happens EVERY time - As long as I stay at around 2,000 rpm's. If I "punch" it, it acts normal (no noise), or if I keep the rpms above 2500, I won't hear the noise. I'm lost, any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS. Its not a grinding noise, it is more of a rumble and the entire vehicle vibrates like some serious bass in the speakers!

I have a 99, also, though I haven't heard what you describe in mine, I have seen similiar posts. If I recall, I've heard suggestions that the trans fluid should be changed to eliminate the rumble you describe. I'm sure someone else will be along with more details.

Thanks, I hope it is something as simple as that.

I have 59,000 miles on it, so I guess changing it wouldn't be a bad idea. My brother has the exact same year and model, and he doesn't have the problem either. I wish this board kept some of the old posts!

Thanks again.

I have the same issue on my 99 EB 4x4. I read a TSB about the Neutralization of Engine and Exhaust. I haven't done this yet, but will be over the nest few weeks.
So far I think this truck has to many little annoying issues for a 99 w/ 50K

Can you please explain this neutralization of engine and exhaust? I'm confused! Did a search on the net and didn't come up with a thing!

99 Bauer, that is your tranny going bad. I had the same problem last year and my local dealer had to rebuild the tranny and install a new torque converter. One of the salesmen told me it happened on his 2K also. Luckily I have an extended warranty that covered all the work. It should be a recall item.

It sounds like a shift shudder from3-4.Mine did that too mildly until I had a power flush and change .Went away.My 98 has 55k on it now.The fluid was over due 10,000 miles or so.

Thanks karnage, I'll try that first. Mine is progressively getting worse....

If I have to rebuild the tranny, I will be completely pissed! I just bought it 1,000 miles ago!

I'm taking it to the Ford dealer, do they automatically "power flush" and fill when I do a transmission change? If not, what do I look for or what do I ask? I don't want to really tell them the problem I am having, I am sure they will try to talk me into having it rebuilt.

noise

good description of typical lock up converter shudder. i usually recommend the flush or service 1st and then if it dont go away in a few 100 miles most likely it will need converter (but do the flush 1st its much cheaper)

A guy that works at the Ford Dealership says that the solenoid for the clutch packs needs to be cleaned. They will drain the fluid and clean the solenoid and that should solve the problem. Whats up with that?

I agree with the advice to flush it first. Drive it see how it behaves. If you still have a problem work on getting that resolved, but try the service and flush first. Its easier to do more later, if necessary, than to undo something already done.
